I'm at the point where my respect for someone drops if they reference this theory with anything other than serious skepticism. But it's everywhere!

I think you've done a great job at capturing the main reasons why this really annoying meme continues to churn. But I think another reason why parents mistake their children's computer abilities for genius is that they don't know that, more often than not, it was a whole bunch of kids working together that figured out the technology at hand.

Kids are absolutely amazing at sharing information and experimenting together when they want to make something work. Once, when I was in the waiting room of the doctor's office, I watched two young boys go from being complete strangers to trading gaming strategies and secrets in some console game within minutes. (The most adorable moment was we one boy quietly admitted that his favourite character to play was a girl character and the other boy immediately brightened and said, "ME TOO!")

Of course, the ability to pick up technology skills isn't restricted to kids. With a healthy attitude, the opportunity to look over someone's shoulder and ask, "how'dja do that?", and someone kind enough to help you out, we can all be such geniuses.
